1993 Mustang 5.0 LX/LX Convertible Projects
This is a project I have been involved with. The car ('93 LX convertible)
was owned by Jason Alexander, a former co-worker, until it was sold to
Dave Bridges, another former
co-worker. Jason used it extensively in autocross racing and drag racing.
Jay has won his class in autocross numerous times. Many engine, drivetrain,
and suspension modifications have been done by myself, other co-workers,
and Jason. The car ran a 12.96 second quarter mile at Renegade Raceway
in Yakima, WA. The engine runs real strong all the way to the 6250rpm factory
red line. Based on similar configurations and analysis by Quarter Jr. and
Dragplus software we estimate the engine horsepower to be between 300hp
and 330hp. Dave actually bought a '93 LX and swapped the drivetrain
into that car (pictured above). Now the covertible has been sold
back to Jason who has supercharged it and done many more mods. I
can't keep up with their projects anymore.
The engine modifications include:
-
TFS aluminum twisted wedge cylinder heads with stainless steel 2.02" intake
and 1.60" exhaust valves.
-
Cobra upper and lower intake manifold. I mildly ported the lower manifold
to improve flow.
-
24 pound per hour fuel injectors.
-
1.60:1 full roller pedistal mount rocker arms.
-
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
-
65mm throttle body.
-
C&L 70mm mass air flow sensor.
-
E303 Motorsports camshaft. Lift is .498" and duration is 282° advertised
and 220° @ .050" lift.
-
K&N air cleaner.
-
BBK long tube equal length headers.
-
2.5 inch diameter exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers.
Drivetrain improvements include:
-
4.10:1 rear differential gears.
-
Centerforce dual friction kevlar clutch.
-
Hurst short throw shifter.
-
Driveshaft safety loop.
Suspension improvements include:
-
Traction link system on rear suspension.
-
90/10 front struts, full drag suspension including springs and shocks.
-
17" alloy rims with aggressive autocross tires. 15" McCreary's are used
for drag racing.
Other improvements include:
-
Battery relocated into the trunk for weight transfer.
-
Rear wing.
This drivetrain from this convertible was removed and installed into a
'93 LX notchback with full drag suspension. The cam was changed from
the E303 to the F303. Dave also installed 4.30:1 rear gears in the
car. The notchback car has now been modified more. See where
it is now at Dave's website http://members.tripod.com/DAVESMUSTANGRANCH/index.htm
